Where should we move? A relocation quiz for you and your partner

The OurNextCity couples quiz is free to take: 12 questions, about 4 minutes, scored against 915 cities in 183 countries. Your #1 city and its full city page are free to see, with no sign-up. A one-time pass, US$12 (€12 in Europe), opens the full ranking, why each city fits, every city page and, for couples, every place your answers diverged. A partner can answer the same questions separately through a private link, and both sets of answers combine into one ranking that one pass covers. The ranking is a fixed formula with no AI model, built on Open-Meteo, TerraClimate, GeoNames, Natural Earth, NASA elevation, EIU Democracy Index, EF English Proficiency Index, Ookla Speedtest and World Bank data plus our hand-set country tables for cost, safety, healthcare, tax and residency.

How couple mode works

Couple mode is for two people deciding where to move together: each of you answers privately, and the quiz ranks cities for both of you at once.

  • You answer first: the 12 questions, then where you live now and which passport you hold, then rough bands for your household savings and monthly income.
  • You invite your partner: when you finish, you get a private link to send through your phone's share menu, WhatsApp or a text message, or to copy. With an account, we can also email it for you. If your partner is next to you, you can answer together on one device instead.
  • Your partner answers separately: the same 12 questions, plus where they live and which passport they hold. They need no account. A project has two seats, one for each of you.
  • Answers stay private until you both finish: neither of you sees the other's answers. Until then, whoever finished first sees a ranking on their own answers, and it merges into one as soon as the second person is done.

How your two sets of answers combine

For each question you each pick an answer and how much it matters: Skip, Minor, Some, Major, Essential. Skip counts for nothing, and from Minor up each step counts 3 times the one before, so an Essential answer weighs 9 times a Some answer. A city's fit on each factor is the average of how well it fits each of you, weighted by how much each of you cares, so the partner who cares more about a factor moves it more.

Four parts of the ranking work differently:

  • Tax: the tax question is a dealbreaker with no weight. If you pick different limits, the lower one applies to you both, and a city whose tax tier sits above it is ruled out.
  • Flight time: each of you sets a flight-time limit from your own home. A city past a limit loses 10% of its match per hour over, down to a floor set by how much that person said distance matters (at most a 50% cut, for Essential). The bigger of your two cuts applies.
  • Residency: each passport is checked against the country's long-term routes, with your household budget, and the two results are averaged. Where a route looks hard, the city's match drops by up to half, and a city below our bar moves to a separate not-realistic list that says why, such as the passport it is hardest on.
  • Home countries: cities in the countries either of you lives in now are left out, with one tap to include them.

Each partner's fit is scored from their own answers and home, so the combined ranking is the same whichever of you opens it.

Where you diverge

The results give the percentage of what matters to you that you agree on, and list the factors where your answers differ, sorted by how far apart your answers and weights are and how much the factor matters to you. Free results show the biggest one; the pass shows them all. Each city page shows how well the city fits you both on six factors, and up to two factors where it suits one of you more than the other.

The sample divergence list and sample results show both for a sample couple.

What it costs

Taking the quiz is free, and so is seeing your #1 city. Full results for both of you are a one-time US$12 (€12 in Europe).

The payment is once per project: a partner who joins later sees the same results at no extra cost. There is no subscription.

Questions

Does my partner need an account? No. They open your private link and answer as a guest, with no email or password.

Can my partner see my answers? Not while you are answering. Neither of you sees the other's answers until you have both finished. Then you both see the same combined ranking and where your answers differed.

What if we disagree on taxes or flight time? The stricter answer applies to you both. The lower tax limit rules out every city above it, and each flight-time limit is measured from that person's own home, with the bigger cut applied to the city's match.

Do we both have to pay? No. One pass of US$12 (€12 in Europe) covers the project, and a partner who joins later sees the same results at no extra cost. There is no subscription.

Can we answer on one phone? Yes. When you finish, pick the option to answer together on one device. Your answers stay hidden while your partner takes their turn.

What if my partner never answers? You still get a ranking on your answers alone. It merges with your partner's answers as soon as they finish.
